Mind Over Milkshakes
“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” Buddha
I recently came across a study that caught my attention and we have to talk about it! This study shows that our thoughts and mindset toward food has the ability to affect physiological responses to food! This study was SO interesting because basically it showed how the body responded physically to the thoughts toward the food consumed over the actual food consumed. With that being said, I’m definitely not saying to take the approach of consuming sugar laden/inflammatory foods and trying to convince your body otherwise. But it does show how our thoughts have such an impact for how we function, heal, repair, live and thrive!
Lets dive into the study...
The study was performed on two separate occasions with participants consuming a 380-calorie milkshake under the pretense that it was either a 620-calorie "indulgent" shake or a 140-calorie "sensible" shake.
According to the study, “The hormone-Ghrelin (which is known as the “hunger hormone”), was measured via intravenous blood samples at 3 time points: baseline (20 min), anticipatory (60 min), and post consumption (90 min). During the first interval (between 20 and 60 min) participants were asked to view and rate the (misleading) label of the shake. During the second interval (between 60 and 90 min) participants were asked to drink and rate the milkshake.” (1.)
Results: “The mindset of indulgence produced a dramatically steeper decline in ghrelin after consuming the shake, whereas the mindset of sensibility produced a relatively flat ghrelin response. Participants' satiety was consistent with what they believed they were consuming rather than the actual nutritional value of what they consumed.”(1.)
If this study shows anything, it shows that our mind is so incredibly powerful. Our thoughts matter! Our mindset to wellness and healing matters! In our yearly Functional Medicine Membership and our Healing Hormones Coaching Program, we always start with mindset and stress. It is truly the foundation. You can eat all the right foods and take all of the supplements, but unless you work to address your mindset and stress, you will at some point find that you are spinning your wheels.
